Working with an Editor

I am so thrilled that my book publishing process has begun!! I know some authors might (and I stress might) dread working with an editor. However, being a new author and one who is completely new to this process, I am so excited! The last time I had my work critiqued was when I was in college and professors marked up my essays and papers! For this reason, I was extremely nervous about working with an editor. My thoughts went back to my days at Rutgers when professors would comment, "You write how you speak and you need to make it less like that and more professional."
Therefore, I was nervous. Would this editor think to themselves, "Wow who let this woman write anything let alone a novel?" But then I realized I wrote a novel. I wrote a novel that a publishing company wants to help me publish, so it can't be that bad!!
So I was excited to see what was said, what was changed, how bad of an actual writer am I?
I started looking over the manuscript and seeing the constructive critcism and changes that were made. It is actually fun. I love getting another outside opinion and realizing that, yeah, that makes more sense, yeah I do have a tendancy to do that, and yeah I didn't really like that part either. I also realize that I know my characters better and no they wouldn't say something like that, or I prefer to have this scene take place here, and so on.
I look at editing like someone coming in to clean up my house after a party. They do a great job making my house look better than it did before the party but that trinket didn't go there before. I get to decide if I like the new location better or if I need to move it back to where I originally had it. Some of it is really good, some of it not so much.
This is the process and I am so thrilled to be a new member to it and taking part in it.
Stay tuned to hear about the book cover!! Once we have that narrowed down, you can help choose which one it will be!
