ACOTAR SERIES REVIEW

Ok, so I am starting my new book review blog!! I have decided that I am going to TRY to not give away any "spoilers." I will give a general feeling about the book/series and discuss the characters without giving away things about the books. It is for you to read and make your own conclusions!

I have heard so much about A Court of Thornes and Roses series. I am not normally a "fantasy genre" reader. Yes, I like my vampire and werewolf movies, shows, and books. Yes, I was a Twi Hard when the movie came out and I read the books (team Edward because I love vampires and the old souls they possess). That being said, I have a very low patience for Fairies. I don't know why, I just get annoyed with them for the most part. Forgive my tangent, but I was addicted to the Sookie Stackhouse series until the Fairies took over. My patience faltered and I never finished that series.

That all being said, I gave ACOTAR a try. I actually didn't realize it had to do with Fairies. When I started reading it, I didn't research it, I just heard it was amazing and dove right in. I have to agree with most of the reviews I have read.

The first book started slow. I prayed when the Fairies arrived that there was something more that would arrive. Maybe a vampire...but alas, no. It is monsters and Fairies. I almost didn't finish it. I thought, ugh. Fairies. There is no way I am going to get wrapped up in this nonsense.

Then it happened. The main female character, Feyre is captured and made to battle for her love with barely any experience and only her wits to help her. She gains help from unlikely sources and I was sucked in. I couldn't put the book down. I fell into the Sarah J. Maas spell.

You struggle with her characters. You hope and pray with them. You get mad and find yourself holding your breath with them. After the first book, I was hooked. I read the rest of the series quickly, not wanting to put it down.

Now let me explain, I LOVE a good female character. One that is strong and can kick ass with the best of them. I was a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan (again, vampires). I prayed that Feyre would become that character. As I read the second book in Maas' series, I was disappointed. Feyre struggles. I felt that she is constantly on the defensive, but within herself. She is fighting her own demons in addition to the war in her lands. With the internal struggle, that strong warrior emerges. Maas created her struggle and weakness brilliantly. I was frustrated and annoyed with her weaknesses. However, that is what made her great. At one point when I recognized my frustration, I realized, "Oh. This is what I am supposed to feel." That realization brought me a whole new perspective. This is something that carries with a lot of her female characters. There is a part of them that has to die to be reborn. That death takes a while. It isn't quick. It isn't a couple of chapters and the heavens open, and a new stronger character emerges. It is slow. It is painful. I became enamored with it.

When I finished the final book in this series thus far (I believe there is another coming out), I loved Fairies. Her fairies. The ones that are tattooed and broken. The ones that have strength through their weakness. The ones that gain strength through their struggles.

Now, I promised no spoilers, but I feel like it would be wrong if I didn't tell you whose team I was on. As so many of her readers, I stared out Team Tamlin. I felt so bad for him. I tried to understand him and wanted to sympathize with him so many times. I did end up falling "in love" with Rhysand, before I turned on Tamlin, but I still felt sorry for him. Until the cauldron. Until Feyre's sisters were involved. That was when I turned against him and found I could not forgive him. Then I was team Rhysand all the way. Sorry if that is a "spoiler" but I hope that gives you more incentive to read the story. I hope that makes you say, well now I have to see what this is all about. That is what happened to me when I was toward the end of the first book and I happened to see some comments on Facebook where people became Rhysand fans and I was like, "Whaaat???" It intrigued me and gave me more of a reason to continue.

I am currently reading Throne of Glass. I will give that review when I get through that series, so in the meantime, I will send some reviews of books I have read over the past year. Hopefully this was a good starting off point and you enjoyed it. See you next time!!!
